Southwest Airlines Plane Aborts Landing to Avoid Collision with Private Jet at Chicago Midway Airport

 

On Tuesday morning at Chicago Midway International Airport, a close call unfolded when a Southwest Airlines plane and an unauthorized private jet converged on the same runway. The incident, reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), took place at approximately 8:50 a.m. local time.

Incident Overview

Southwest Flight 2504, arriving from Omaha, Nebraska, was preparing to land when air traffic controllers identified a potential conflict with a Bombardier Challenger 350 operated by Flexjet. The private jet, en route to Knoxville, Tennessee, had entered the runway without proper authorization, prompting immediate corrective actions from the air traffic control team.

Critical Communications and Go-Around

Air traffic control directed the private jet to “turn left on Runway 4L, cross Runway 31L and hold short of Runway 31C.” However, a miscommunication ensued when the jet’s pilot initially misinterpreted the instructions. The controller quickly corrected the directive, but not before tensions escalated. In response to the evolving situation, the flight crew of Southwest Flight 2504 executed a go-around maneuver to maintain a safe distance from the private jet. According to FlightRadar24, the two aircraft came as close as approximately 2,050 feet before the maneuver was initiated, and the Southwest plane eventually passed over the jet at an uncorrected pressure altitude of 900 feet—roughly 250 feet above the ground after adjustments.

This event adds to a series of recent safety concerns, including a midair collision over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, a Medevac jet crash in Philadelphia, and a regional airline accident off the coast of Nome, Alaska, which resulted in 10 fatalities.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy underscored the importance of strict adherence to air traffic control instructions, stating on social media that pilots who fail to comply risk having their licenses revoked. Meanwhile, Flexjet, which operates the Challenger 350, acknowledged the incident and confirmed that further details were being gathered.
