In a striking video address, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken aim at what he describes as the bloated nature of local governments. He went on to announce a bold plan: proposing the elimination of property taxes across the state—a measure he hints could be put on the ballot as early as 2026.
The Rationale Behind the Proposal
Governor DeSantis argued that property taxes have become a heavy burden, particularly for senior citizens and those on fixed incomes. According to him, after years of hard work—buying land, purchasing a home, and even paying off a mortgage—residents still find themselves perpetually paying what he likens to “rent” to the government.
“You work hard, you purchase land, a home, maybe you pay off a mortgage – at what point are you free and clear? Property tax says that you never really own your property, because you have to pay rent to the government.”
He emphasized that many seniors, whose homes were purchased decades ago at a modest price, are now facing significantly higher property taxes as their home values have skyrocketed. For instance, a home bought for $200,000 thirty years ago might now be worth $1.3 million—yet the tax burden continues to increase.
“You have senior citizens that are on fixed incomes. The home they bought for $200,000, 30 years ago, is now worth $1.3 million, and they have to pay more taxes.”
Governor DeSantis also critiqued the current homestead exemption, stating that it is too weak to offer meaningful protection against these rising tax pressures. He sees this not only as an operational flaw but also a philosophical dilemma—one where homeowners never truly achieve full ownership of their property.
“The homestead exemption is too weak to protect people. That’s a problem, philosophically, but operationally – people are getting pinched from these property taxes.”
A Call for Broader Change
DeSantis stressed that this proposal is part of a larger initiative to re-examine and scale back the expanding reach of local governments. He warned that the continued growth of these entities has led to unnecessary fiscal burdens, suggesting that taxpayers deserve a system that offers greater transparency and efficiency in public spending.
“That’s one of the reasons we want to do DOGE on local governments – there’s a huge problem of growth of local governments… let’s get in there, let’s look at this and be transparent about it. Taxpayers will be able to identify ways they can spend less.”
In addition to addressing property taxes, the governor noted that his administration is not planning any tax increases at the state level. In fact, he mentioned efforts are underway to eliminate the tax on business rent—a move aimed at stimulating economic growth.
“There is no appetite to do things at the state level that will increase any of our taxes… we are actually looking to eliminate the tax on business rent.”
Potential Impact
If implemented, the removal of property taxes could fundamentally alter the fiscal landscape of Florida. With the state already experiencing a surge in population growth, DeSantis believes that eliminating these taxes will not only relieve financial pressure on residents—especially the elderly—but also attract even more new residents to the state.
