MTV EMA host Nicki Minaj dedicates a rap song to Scotland on Nov. 9 in Glasgow, Scotland.
"Anaconda" hitmaker Nicki Minaj rapped about redheads and rallied the crowd for a sing-along of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" during her dedication to host country Scotland at Sunday's MTV Europe Music Awards.
That was among the many musical memories made at the show, held at the SSE Hydro. Among the others? A Minaj medley and performances from U2, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Kiesza, Enrique, Charli XCX, Royal Blood and Slash.
MTV EMA host Minaj stuck to the night's broad time-travel theme, giving the crowd doses of the past, present and future. The Best Hip-Hop winner opened with her 2010 hit "Super Bass," debuted an emotional "Bed of Lies" ballad featuring Skylar Grey, and closed with her Sir Mix-a-Lot sendup "Anaconda."
Backed by a string section and Edge on the upright piano, Bono serenaded viewers with U2's "Every Breaking Wave" ballad that crescendoed as the smoke billowed.
Fresh off performing at the Country Music Association Awards, Ariana Grande performed "Problem," for which she won Best Song. Grande, who also earned the Best Female honor, then broke into "Break Free," at one point flying above the audience.
Ed Sheeran slowed things down with a rendition of "Thinking Out Loud," accompanied by two contemporary dancers who provided a visual representation of his lyrics a la Dancing With the Stars.
Sheeran also joined Scotland's Red Hot Chilli Pipers for a short jam session of "Sing."
Nestled behind a piano, a pregnant Alicia Keys pleaded for peace and equality with her "We Are Here" anthem about violent current events.
In a tribute to Global Icon winner Ozzy Osbourne, Slash tickled his guitar strings alongside Myles Kennedy, and The Conspirators (along with Simon from Biffy Clyro) performed a raucous rendition of "Crazy Train," Ozzy's pivotal first solo single from 1980.
For "Hideaway," former Canadian Navy reservist Kiesza began in a glamorously lit British phone booth before breaking into a hip choreographed routine.
Enrique Iglesias riled up fans with "I'm a Freak" and spiced up festivities with "Bailando."
Charli XCX delivered a one-two punch of "Boom Clap" and "Break the Rules."
British duo Royal Blood rocked out with "Figure It Out."
