Don't be sad because it's over; be happy because it happened. At least that's what we keep telling ourselves here — and it isn't working.
The 2014 World Cup was a classic on so many levels, and now it's over after Germany's thrilling 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in Sunday's final. Four more years 'til the next one? Oh, God — the pain, the anguish, the raw emotional turmoil we're feeling right now.
Watching the video above simultaneously makes us happy about what we witnessed over the past month and sad about the massive, gaping hole in our lives now.
ESPN used the above montage to sign off after its weeks of stellar World Cup coverage — à la "One Shining Moment," the always-emotional capper to March Madness each year. Then some enterprising YouTuber put it on the Internet for all to see, and here we are.
Watch the four-minute clip for yourself above, and try not to get the chills.
But before you do, here are two other entertaining morning-after tidbits to chew on.
FIFA's star-studded bizarro-world guest list
What do LeBron James, Vladimir Putin, Shakira, Angela Merkel, Wyclef Jean and Ashton Kutcher have in common? All were on FIFA's guest list for the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, according to this document tweeted out by Daniel McDonnell of the Irish Independent.nam-
An eclectic group, to say the least.
Beautiful interactive visualizes all the World Cup goals
This interactive visualization of all 171 World Cup goals is so, so, so cool. Emil Johansson, a chemical engineering student currently in Gothenburg, Sweden, put it together — he's also put together some other cool interactive visualizations on his site. Worth your time. (It's only interactive on the site; the above image is just a still.)
O.K., now if you need us we'll be standing outside the World Cup's bedroom window with a boom-box while blasting Peter Gabriel and proclaiming our eternal love.
