Sometimes fake leaked footage is convincing, and other times it's so unconvincing that it's only good for a laugh. But it's rare that fake leaked footage is both unconvincing and absolutely amazing at the same.
Such is the case with a new video claiming to be leaked footage from the set of Star Wars Episode VII.
Posted by German YouTube user Frank Wunderlich, the video shows what it might look like if all those Star Wars air vehicles were real and waiting to be deployed from a present-day airport.
Merging footage from the very real Frankfurt Airport in Germany with an imagined "Imperial Starport Frankfurt," the video shows off an AT-AT Walker trudging down a runway while a van drives underfoot and an Imperial Destroyer sits in the background.
We also get to see an Imperial Shuttle accompanied by two TIE fighters realistically flying within the confines of the airport's air space. Later, another Imperial Shuttle is shown ascending into the sky as a damaged Death Star looms far off in the background. There are even a couple of AT-ST Walkers in the background of some of the scenes.
The rendering of the airport scene, complete with shuttle buses and stair cars, is so realistic that a few of the video's YouTube commenters actually went so far as to point out aspects of the footage that appear fake. So, despite the levitating air vehicles and giant robot tanks, it's clear that at least a few viewers were at least momentarily fooled by the clip's realism.
Adding to the realism are the shaky cam effects (we're not supposed to be getting this footage!) and the random zoom-ins on certain scenes.
From the background sounds of the "Starport" and its war machines, to the near seamless merging of real world airport structures with Star Wars lore (including Stormtroopers standing guard), the video is a tantalizing reminder that the fictional world of Jedi magic will soon return to theaters.
