Endangered Animal-Themed Condoms: Do It for a Good Cause

A polar bear scans the surrounding area for seals from the top of a large piece of glacial ice in Liefdefjorden, Svalbard.

In honor of World Population Day on Friday, the Center for Biological Diversity is giving out 40,000 condoms emblazoned with images of endangered animals on the packaging and catchy slogans like, "Wrap with care, save the polar bear."
The condoms promote the message that human overpopulation contributes to the animal extinction crisis. With 7 billion people on the planet, there is a demand on resources that animals need such as plants and water, and that's partially responsible for the rise of animal extinction.

Each individual package contains two condoms and information about the issue. Volunteers will be handing out the packages around U.S. cities — including New York, Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Seattle and more — in places like malls, festivals and yoga studios. The center has been distributing the animal-themed condoms since 2009 on days like Earth Day and of course, World Population Day.
While its a unique way to spread the news about the cause, some are confused by packaging at first.
"A lot of people think they're chocolate," Taralynn Reynolds, CBD's population and sustainability organizer, told Mashable. But when they learn more about the condoms, "they get the connection and start to care."
