Microsoft and DreamWorks have teamed up to create a new game for Windows Phone and tablets that turns road trips into dragon-themed adventures based on your journey.
Dragons Adventure World Explorer drops players into the fantasy dragon-filled world from How to Train Your Dragon 2 but uses real time data to personalize the game depending on each player's location.
The game is best when played in the car, though there are other gameplay modes that don't require a data connection. Players (or their parents) begin by entering their destination and the app incorporates data from Foursquare, HERE Maps and The Weather Channel to customize the gameplay to your route as your drive.
Foursquare venues will appear on the map as you pass them in real-time, for example, and the more popular locations will have more vikings standing around them. Weather Channel data, on the other hand, is used to display real-time weather conditions for the area you're exploring.
“As parents, we sat around the table and we could all kind of relate to how hard it can be to get kids in the car,” Pete Mauro a global innovation and app development producer for Microsoft toldMashable. "We thought, wouldn’t be cool if we could make a game that was personalized for whatever journey you’re going on.”
Each game is tied to where you're going so the missions will wind down as you get closer to your destination and the game will end when it's time to leave the car. Players can also choose to explore other major cities from around the world through the game by playing in Explore mode.
Mauro says future updates will incorporate different kinds of data into the game. Traffic information, for example, will be pulled from HERE Maps and show up in the game as sheep blocking a player's path.
Microsoft also plans to release a software development kit so other developers can build their own games and experiences using the same mapping technology.
"Maps are pretty boring now," said Mauro. "For the most part, places are dots and then you see streets. There hash’t really been a lot of rich layers added to that and the ability to really navigate through it and explore it in a different way that’s visual and rich."
