Jessica Chastain at the "Foxcatcher" in Cannes, France on May 19.
Scratch Jessica Chastain from the very long list of top-tier actresses who may take a lead role in the second season of HBO’s True Detective.
That’s the upshot of a hot rumor, first started Tuesday by Nerdist, that the Oscar-nominated star of Zero Dark Thirty was offered the gig.
People with knowledge of the situation tell Mashable that it’s not happening, and Chastain’s publicist, who did not immediately return our messages Wednesday, wrote in an email to The Wrap that “she’s not doing this project officially."
So here’s what we now know so far about the second installment of the anthology series:
- A woman will get a front-and-center role, per series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who told HitFix in an interview that it will be about “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system."
- That woman will not be Jessica Chastain.
- That woman could be literally anyone else.
- Stars from season one, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, won’t be in it either.
Maddening, right? But so it goes with True Detective, whose original mythology was inspired by a story about a story that supposedly drives all those who read it insane. Expect more of the same from this casting carousel, and by carousel we mean a sort of flat circle that just goes around and around. (We don't know the premiere date of season two, either.)
