One person, the American inventor Thomas Midgely, created what are considered to be two of today's biggest environmental evils- CFCs and leaded petrol.

His inventions show how science can overcome practical problems but how apparently perfect ideas can have disastrous consequences.

After World War I, Midgely was searching for a chemical solution to the problem of an irritating sound heard coming from car engines. This saw the development of leaded petrol. Nowadays, most scientists believe that lead causes atmospheric pollution and brain damage in young children. Midgely then turned to the refrigerator industry in an attempt to make improvements to the cooling systems. He developed a substance known as CFC, which as we know now, is damaging the earth's ozone layer.

In 1940, Midgely was paralysed by polio. He invented a pulley system to enable him to get out of bed. Sadly, he strangled himself while using it.
